Myths, legends and secret rituals 

Barandiaran    Famous at all times, the sare cave played a central role in this frontier area : habitat in prehistoric times, refuge during the different wars, famous passage and exchange place for the “night job”.
     The ancestral legends about the cave still alive even nowadays. These ames have been collected by the eminent JM de Barandiaran who made a lot of works in fields of prehistory and etnology. They are linked to the fact that humans have the right to own a land to bury their defunts, the basque mythology reflects this idea as well.
    JM de Barandiaran made a lot of investigations here in this land. Considered as the greatest basque anthropologist and as one of nowadays greatest mind. Native of Ataun (Gipuzkoa), he lived in sare for about 15 years where he carried on his investigations.

 He died in 1991, he was 102 years old. Sare pays homage to Barandiaran dedicating him the new tour because he devoted his whole life in memory of Basque people.

 Outils  

   In the Basque country, the oldest human vestiges date back to 200 000 years. Some anthropologists, linguists and archeologists think that we started to speak in basque during the protohistory. Then, when Roman people came to our Basque land, the historic period started.

    


Vestiges which are shown in the museum : 

  • From prehistoric times : flint, reindeers anthers, scrapers, arrows points, axes for polished stones ...
  • From protohistoric times : human bones, funerial urns, ceramics, bronze axes.
  • From historic times : roman coins, forged coins, Napoleonian vestiges.
